When Samuel LeBlanc shared his testimony during the Take Flight Scholarship Breakfast, he reminded the community just how life-changing a Catholic education can be.
Originally from Canada, Samuel spent much of his childhood moving from place to place as his father served in the Canadian Army. Despite the constant change, his faith and the support of Catholic communities remained a steady foundation.
Everything changed during the onset of COVID-19 when Samuel was diagnosed with Burkitt's lymphoma, a rare and aggressive form of blood cancer.
"It was probably the biggest trial that my family and I had to face. My mom would always say the reason I survived was because of the Catholic community that was praying for us."
Following his recovery, Samuel's family returned to Washington, where he reunited with friends at St. Michael Parish School before enrolling at Pope John Paul II High School.
He describes his experience at JPII as one that transformed both his academic journey and spiritual life.
"The teachers and staff genuinely cared about us succeeding. Whether it's through Step-Up, where you get help with schoolwork, or coaches who help you practice to be the best you can, JPII has made a difference."
Samuel credits generous donors, parish communities, and the Archdiocese for making his education possible.
"Without their help, our family would not be able to afford Catholic education. I'm grateful to be a student at this school—it's a blessing to have a community that continues to support us."
